For a century, the Wilmer Eye Institute has born — and borne witness to — an untold number of landmark moments in the history of the field. In this special weekly series, we will visit some of the many Wilmer firsts, events and people who have blazed the trail to expand our knowledge and ability to deliver the top-of-the-line care Wilmer is known for the world over.

Founded in 1925, Wilmer Eye Institute pioneered integrating clinical care, education, and research in ophthalmology. Today, Wilmer serves over 281,000 patients annually across 10 locations in Maryland and Virginia, leads groundbreaking discoveries through five core research centers, and publishes 700+ papers each year.

The Wilmer Centennial: The Low Vision Enhancement System

In 1994, a collaboration between the Wilmer Eye Institute, NASA and Honeywell led to the development of a revolutionary device that allowed people with very low vision to see. A precursor to today’s wearable optics, the Low Vision Enhancement System represented one of the first collaborations between government, private industry and academia.
